Creating Shared Value Through Tourism

Creating shared value is about creating more or better quality jobs in the community, adding value to local businesses, in the tourism sector and beyond, and increasing the value of the products we sell. All benefits of developing the principle of shared value; a concept Michael Porter, of Harvard and cluster theory, has been writing about. He argues this will lead to new approaches that generate innovation and growth for companies and also greater benefits for society. These ideas have been implicit in much of the work on tourism and local economic development done over the last few years and explicitly recognised in ABTA’s commitment to rewarding jobs and thriving destinations.

Our annual conference on Tourism and Local Economic Development will again bring together some of the best examples of initiatives taken in the tourism sector in the UK and around the world. It will provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on their experience and that of others, in order to increase the contribution of tourism to local economic development and the creation of employment.

Porter is challenging companies to take a lead in bringing business and society back together; he argues that this can best be done by placing the principle of shared value at the core of business practice. Businesses he argues need, acting as businesses not charities, to create “economic value in a way that also creates value for society by addressing its needs and challenges.” Societal issues need to be at the core not the periphery. Tourism is already doing much but how can we achieve more! We will consider this further at our conference – be part of the debate!
