CREATING SHARED VALUE THROUGH TOURISM ![]() Date: Wednesday 1st February 2012 Venue: overlooking St Paul's Cathedral in London Places are limited to book a place please email icrtcic@gmail.com Creating Shared Value Through Tourism Creating shared value is about creating more or better quality jobs in the community, adding value to local businesses, in the tourism sector and beyond, and increasing the value of the products we sell. All benefits of developing the principle of shared value; a concept Michael Porter, of Harvard and cluster theory, has been writing about. He argues this will lead to new approaches that generate innovation and growth for companies and also greater benefits for society. These ideas have been implicit in much of the work on tourism and local economic development done over the last few years and explicitly recognised in ABTA’s commitment to rewarding jobs and thriving destinations. Our annual conference on Tourism and Local Economic Development will again bring together some of the best examples of initiatives taken in the tourism sector in the UK and around the world. It will provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on their experience and that of others, in order to increase the contribution of tourism to local economic development and the creation of employment. Porter is challenging companies to take a lead in bringing business and society back together; he argues that this can best be done by placing the principle of shared value at the core of business practice. Businesses he argues need, acting as businesses not charities, to create “economic value in a way that also creates value for society by addressing its needs and challenges.” Societal issues need to be at the core not the periphery. Tourism is already doing much but how can we achieve more! We will consider this further at our conference – be part of the debate! 09:30 Registration and Coffee 10:00 Welcome and Opening 10:15 Introduction to Creating Shared Value and the day Harold Goodwin ICRETH* and ICRT 10:45 Tour Operating and Creating Shared Value Simon Pickup ABTA 11:15 The Social and Cultural Benefits of Tourism Ken Robinson 11:45 Coffee 12:00 The Importance of a Collective Approach to a Thriving Visitor Economy Jason Freezer VisitEngland 12:30 The New Forest Experience from Tourism to Local Economic Development Anthony Climpson NFDC 13:00 Lunch and networking opportunity 14:00 Reporting Local Economic Impact Jenefer Bobbin Responsible Tourism Reporting 14:30 Village Ways Richard Hearn Village Ways 15:00 The Bridlington Fish Challenge Martin Batt Yorkshire Wildlife Trust 15:30 Coffee 16:00 ROOTS: a case study from The Gambia Suzannah Newham The Travel Foundation 16:15 A Tour Operator Intervention in The Gambia Jo Baddeley,Sustainable Destinations Manager,Thomas CookUK & Ireland 17:30 Close and networking over coffee until 18:00 For more background on Creating Shared Value You can read more about the shared value * Harold Goodwin is now in the International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Metropolitan
